  • I am really enjoying my studies on black paper with gouache. I think they are so dramatic and full of mystery. Like a stage setting for the the diva of an opera! To read about today’s painting visit @postcards_to_nature. #gouache #gouachepainting #gouacheartist #muirwoods #trillium #botanicalart #botanicalartist #fabrianoblackblack

  • I pivoted again today! Actually I did it twice. After seeing these tundra swans a few days ago, I was going to paint them today instead of what I had planned. I spent the day hiking and working outside and then I discovered that a patch of purple crocuses had burst into bloom- how could I not do both?! I thought about how I would work that into a sketchbook type page.... I called it Winter into Spring. The icing on the cake? When I stepped out to photograph my card not only was there still light in the sky at 7pm, the PEEPERS were peeping! First time this year. #springpeepers #tundraswan #sketchbookstudies #watercolorsketch

  • Today’s postcard is about wild turkeys. That thing about learning something new everyday? Well, turns out there are five subspecies of turkeys in the US. I was told this by my ‘don’t-ever-play-trivia-with-him-because-he’ll-bury-you’ brother. This is the Rio Grande subspecies in coastal California. Graphite and watercolor study. #wildturkey #graphitesketch #birdsketch

  • Kokiʻo keʻokeʻo or Koki’o kea (hibiscus waimeae ) which translates loosely to hibiscus white white or ‘koki’o that is white as snow’ is a native Hawaiian grey- barked tree hibiscus occurring only on Kauai. It is considered rare and is listed as endangered. It is one of the only native hibiscus with a scent- the white blooms fade to pink in the afternoon. was able to see this specimen @ntbg Limahuli garden on the Northwest side of the island. Such a beautiful, delicate flower. It is featured on today’s @postcards_to_nature’s virtual trip to Hawaii. #limahuligardenandpreserve #hibiscus #gouache #gouachestudy #fabrianoblackblack

  • 4 4•4•2021 Spring Melodies Dear Nature, Today is a ‘wing’ it day. I had no idea what to do for today’s subject. I stepped outside this morning to let the goats out of the barn, and the first thing I noticed was the loud, insistent calling of an eastern phoebe, a type of flycatcher. My first one of this year showed up only last week, calling “Fee-bee, fee-bee, fee-bee” loudly and insistently. Can you tell how they got their name? They really do say ‘fee-bee’! I stood still for a few moments, letting the morning settle around me until I started hearing all the bird sounds around me; robins trilling, blue jays cawing, black-capped chickadees scolding me and the piercing chip of a skulking cardinal. I heard my flock of crows crying far off in the early morning wind, and the soft, gentle coos of a mourning dove. All melodies

  • I gave myself 15 minutes to do this quick gouache study of skunk cabbage because I wanted to photograph it in the last rays of sun. I needed to sing on Facebook live tonight as it was the anniversary of my beginning to sing every night during lockdown. I did that at 6:30 every night until we came out of Phase 1 lockdown last year. Amazing we are a year later and as my @postcards_to_nature says ‘Another Summer coming.’. #skunkcabbage #gouache #gouachestudy

I struggled a little with how to portray this very natural event in a tasteful yet true manner and, truth be told, I even thought I couldn’t.
