silverpoint

Before graphite, before charcoal, artists drew with metal. Silverpoint — a silver-tipped stylus drawn across a specially prepared surface — produces a line of extraordinary delicacy, a mark that catches light and shimmers faintly on the surface of the paper.

It cannot be erased. Every line is a commitment.

Kelly Leahy Radding’s silverpoint drawings carry a quality that is almost impossible to describe in reproduction: a quiet luminosity, a sense that the drawing is lit from within. Birds, animals, and botanical subjects rendered in this ancient medium take on an ethereal presence — familiar subjects made somehow timeless. These are works to live with slowly, noticed differently on grey mornings than on bright afternoons
