Transformation – Fire
Coyote, Point Reyes National Seashore, California
watercolor on mounted paper, 20 x 30 inches, $3,000.00
In Native American lore, Coyote was the “Trickster’ but he was also a teacher and Fire-bringer to the people. When Coyote saw that man suffered from the cold in winter, he used his cleverness and intelligence to steal fire away from the fire spirits to give to man to help him stay warm. Today, coyotes are mostly thought of as a nuisance at best, and at worst, hunted mercilessly. But Coyote has ‘tricked’ modern day man; instead of being exterminated, they are thriving, and have expanded into every environmental niche including suburbia. They also adapted to fill the void left by man’s extirpation of their canid cousin, the wolf. Coyote is a master of the transformations needed to adapt to a changing world.
