Bluebirds were one of my mother’s favorite birds along with cardinals. I never get tired of seeing them. Over the years we have lived at our house, the bluebirds, once only a harbinger of spring, have started to stay here all winter. As a bird lover and also a botanical artist, I am caught in a bit of a love/hate relationship with the plant. The multiflora roses are an aggressively invasive species, and I struggle over the fact that the birds love to eat the hips during the cold days of winter but the plant is taking over native forests. But I was happy that the bluebirds were able to get a nice meal of rose hips after a blustery ice storm.
