Cactus Clown

Cactus Clown
Watercolor on Cowley’s veiny calfskin vellum
11.5″ H x 9″W

I had the pleasure of photographing this ‘clown’ while in Phoenix for our American Society of Botanical Artists Annual Conference. I was attending a workshop before the conference at the Desert Botanical Gardens in Phoenix, AZ. It was a workshop for painting on vellum taught by Kate Nessler. Every day during our lunch break, the cactus wrens would be begging for tidbits from our lunches! I could hardly get lunch finished as I wanted to follow them around to photograph them. I really enjoyed spending time with them and knew that I would eventually create a painting from the experience; ‘Cactus Clown’.
