Blues Walker

raven, casein, blue raven, panel, Kelly Leahy Radding

Blues Walker
12” x 24”
casein on Ampersand Claybord

I love ravens! I could spend a year painting nothing but ravens and be satisfied! I was able to get my raven fix this year at Yellowstone National Park in September and at Point Reyes National Seashore in California in October. I was so captured by this enchanting bird, walking up to me in Yellowstone that I knew I would paint it. Sometimes I see a painting in my mind very clearly and sometimes when I am in the process of painting, a totally different image appears. I had fully intended to paint this raven more true to life, using the blues as an underpainting for all the blacks of the bird. But something happened as I was in the process of painting. The blues just felt ‘right’ and I knew it was going to be a blue raven after all!
