My favorite birds have always been raptors and songbirds, birds of the water didnʻt interest me much until I started birding more seriously over the past few years. Now I canʻt imagine how I didnʻt find them just as fascinating. Many of the Hawaiian water birds are endangered making them just that more urgent for me to paint. The last two years, I have spent two weeks on Kauai in the spring as a member of the National Tropical Botanical Garden Florilegium Society and many evenings after work I cruise through the salt ponds to ʻsee what I can seeʻ. I was beyond excited to see several stilts over the course of the two weeks my first visit. This past year, I saw many stilts but each time I saw them, they still made me catch my breath. They look like they should be so awkward, but in reality they are incredibly elegant.
