Mockingbirds don’t frequent the woods around my house in Central Connecticut, but luckily I get to see them when I go birding at the New England coast. The mockingbird is known for being one the avian worlds best mimics – they will sit out in the open and proudly run through their repertoire. I heard this one performing long before I saw it at Hammonasset Beach State Park. When I rounded a corner on the trail, there it was, sitting on top of the vegetation singing its heart out! I titled it Diamond in the Rough, because most people would agree that it is a fairly plain bird when judging it by its plumage, but when it starts to sing…!
